Pollan treats consciousness as a live mystery and walks you through neuroscience, philosophy, psychedelics, AI, and plants in search of it. The attraction is watching a very good guide step into territory where experts disagree. You find yourself wondering whether your own ordinary experience of being 'you' is stranger than you normally notice.

Many fixes make it worse. Long tenant contracts block young renters because landlords need certainty. Rent caps shrink supply and push more into the black market. Forced prices rarely beat actual supply and demand. Half of it looks like policy naivety, the other half like too many are in charge. Would be entertaining if the pain was not so real for so many.
People were created to be loved. Things were created to be used. The reason the world is in chaos is because things are being loved and people are being used.
